What is Self-Determination Theory?

Self-determination theory emphasizes people's need for autonomy and intrinsic motivation. According to this theory,
Humans have three basic psychological needs that are important for an individual's well-being and mental health.

Competence:

  • This refers to the need for an individual to accomplish a specific task or to demonstrate sufficient intelligence, judgment, skill, and/or strength.

Relatedness

Relatedness:

  • This refers to the need to establish and maintain meaningful relationships and a sense of belonging.

  • It is defined as the desire to interact with others, to build relationships, and to experience caring.

Autonomy

Autonomy:

  • This refers to the need for individuals to have the ability and power to independently control and self-determine their own behavior and life goals, including the right to speak and modify personal behavior and choices.
